Car paint correction is the most commonly performed paint treatment service in professional detailing. The one step paint correction service is the most profitable paint correction service due to the shorter timeframes that it takes and how many more cars you can do in a day – from one to two or even three to four if you have a team of employees. Whereas dual or multiple step correction services whilst delivering a far superior result take at least two to four times as long if not more and the quality you deliver must be extremely high as customers expectations are also extremely high
A single polishing step on any paintwork must restore clarity, colour richness and high gloss to paintwork as well as remove the majority of defects and deliver a finish that your client instantly recognises as top quality. This guide outlines the equipment you should have as a professional, the time frames (minimum to maximum) that you should aim at to perform the service properly and efficiently to ensure profitabilityy, the optional equipment that could boost results and efficiency and the minimum standard (percentage of correction) you should be delivering to your customers today with this service.
This service is not to be confused with a gloss enhancement which is the shortest and least expensive vehicle paint treatment service that detailers can offer using a polishing machine. Enhancements usually are a one to two hour service. I am happy to create a guide for that service as well if there is enough interest including how to do a duo or tri gloss version for better results in the same time frame as doing a standard gloss enhancement.
The Tools




You will need either a forced rotation DA polisher with 5-8 mm orbit size or a random orbital DA polisher with at least 12 mm orbit but ideally a 15 mm, 21 mm or 25 mm orbit DA polisher or a combination of two different orbit sized polishers (15 mm and 25 mm ideally) and 12 mm for less damaged paints and more complex panel shapes that larger orbit tools may not get into close enough to correct well.
A forced rotation polisher is an excellent choice when working on cars with bonnet bulges/hood scoops where the side of the scoop/bulge a random orbital usually struggles to rotate and oscillate properly on. But also if the paint is quite difficult to correct and if you want a more dramatic improvement to the paint’s appearance plus the pad is always rotating and oscillating due to the gear driven action. Even though the orbit size of these machines is only 5, 6.8 mm and 8 mm, unlike the random orbitals with the same orbit size or similar, these gear driven polishes pack a real punch especially at the highest machine speeds.
It is the gear driven action not the size of the orbit that gives the polisher it’s defect removal abilities. Use a random orbital polisher if the paint is soft to medium hardness and also if it is somewhat sticky or very sticky (polish sticks to the paint and is hard to wipe off) as using a forced rotation polisher on that paint would generate more heat and cause the stickiness to kick in and cause you all sorts of problems. To resolve sticky paint issues use faster arm speeds and more passes and a drop of paraffin oil for increased lubrication and slightly less heat as well as smaller pads (3 and 5 inch not 6 inch)
The pads
A microfiber pad and up to four different grades of polyurethane foam pads are what you will need to cover all the different variations of paint hardness, paint damage level and the desired results the customer is looking for from this service. A wool pad is generally not recommended but you could do a half step over the paint with a wool pad then one complete pass over the paint with a foam pad to enhance the colour and reflection. I highly recommend any wool pads you buy be knitted, carbonised and super washed (barbs have been removed) such as the first generation Rupes DA wool pads which I had lab tested and were 19.5 micron. The 3M DA versions are I believe made by Rupes. Most wool pads are 21 to 29 micron so much courser. The 3M DA wool pad versions made by Rupes are half the price and probably more durable now compared to the new Rupes DA wool pads. The lower the micron number the smaller and finer the fibers and the more there would be on the pad but also the more expensive the wool is – up to several thousand dollars per bale or more for the lower number micron wools which pad manufacturers would never use.
My recommendations for fiber pads are ZviZZer, Lake Country, Purewax and Buff and Shine pads. With foam pads the pad every detailer should have is The Pad King Spitfire green all rounder pad. The Frostbite cutting pad, Lone Star pad, Midas Touch gold pad or any other brand’s medium to light cut foam pad, heavy polish and light polishing pad would be the ideal pads to choose from.
The Frostbite pad would be best for a one step correction on medium hard and hard paints as the finishing capabilities of this foam are not as good as less aggressive pads but on a light coloured hard paint it would be satisfactory to use on it’s own.

The towels/bonnets
Some 500 gsm or higher gsm towels that are taller pile on one side and flat on the other are an excellent choice as long as the paint responds nicely and isn’t hard to wipe the residue off of. If so try a 350 gsm as some high gsm fluffy towels are not good as a damp or wet wipe towel, only the final dry wipe.
Do not skimp when it comes to towels, top quality towels work better, easier and don’t leave the lint or the marring that the lower quality ones can do on some paint types. Edgeless towels are usually nice but not all are created equal. Watch out for a sharp edge on the sides (the middle layer that supports both sides of the towel – some towels have a sharp edge that can cause towel marks that look like scratches but wipe away with a little moisture but drive us crazy at times.
You can also use a microfiber bonnet that you wrap around a foam pad and machine off the residue but these tend to clog up reasonably quickly and you have to turn it over then replace it as it’s residue pickup performance drops off as it becomes loaded
The polishes
The polishes you will need are either All in one polishes, a combination of a cutting compound and a medium polish, a one product paint correction cream (AKA single product correction liquid) like 3D One, CSI Ceram X or XX, System One polish or a primer polish like Carpro Essence and Labocosmetica Fiero with adaptive abrasive technology.
Others you could use are Angelwax, Sonax Perfect Finish, Perfect Finish and Ceramic Glaze OS 02-06, Koch Chemie P6 All in One or any of the other three – H9, F6 and M3, Rupes DA Fine or DA Fine and Uno Pure 80/20 ratio mix, Rupes Uno Protect or Advanced All in one polishes, Oberk Sole, Supreme Cut or Supreme Polish for less damaged or softer paints. Carpro’s range of polishes especially essence can also be used and any other water based non diminishing or diminishing abrasive medium cut compound or less aggressive polish.
Pro Tip: Source the safety data sheets of the abrasive polishes you use and or wish to use, read the hazardous ingredients section – whilst this part of the data sheet can often be quite vague as they don’t have to list all the ingredients, if you see kaolin clay, crystalline silica, diatomaceous earth, a high percentage of aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, pine oil, pumice and desulfurised or dearomatised kerosene and clear coat softeners mentioned, use it up and never buy it again or steer well clear of it. Kaolin clay is an abrasive that makes alot of dust and is not a great abrasive for this purpose, crystalline silica is the old type abrasive that cuts hard but cannot finish well and usually scours modern paint. It should no longer be in any products. It causes silicosis. Diatomaceous earth is another type of abrasive which was once used but should be avoided. Pine oil was in the old Farecla G3 and is not a great lubricant like paraffin oil is today. Some solvents in polishes make the product lack the ability to get that super rich clear gloss that a true waterborne polish range will deliver – as seen here with my car

Lighting
This is one of the most important things you need to have if you are going to offer paint correction. At a bare minimum you should have a 1000 to 5000 lumens LED handheld light but ideally a clear LED tripod light, the handheld light and even a number of lights setup around and above the vehicle. I use an Infinity X1 5000 lumens handheld torch which costs sixty dollars from costco to inspect my results but you may be able to source something much better but it certainly has stood the test of time for me but lights from Stedi, Scangrip, Intex (via ebay) and other brands should really help you see much better.
For optimal results do the paint correction work at night with just the tripod lights turned on – it is amazing how much more defects you see at night with no room lights on just the tripod light facing the panel compared to polishing during the day with lights on. For this service it’s not really needed to be polishing at night whereas show car paint correction it may be.

The minimum standard to deliver in 2026
Paint defect removal percentage: 75–80%
If you achieve 85% to 90% then that’s great but never promise to deliver that as sometimes you will not be able to with some paints. A car with 8-9 out of 10 damage to the paint needs an veFocus on removing all the swirl marks and achieving a very high gloss finish with minimum haze (0.1 to 0.4) on the rhopoint detailometer (which we now use for our R&D testing and are promoting for serious paint correction detailers) and just leave the occasional RIDS (random isolated deeper scratches) and deeper marks behind that sanding would be needed to remove and require a much higher service and price tag which most people won’t pay for.
Do not make it perfect or phenomenal – knock out the swirl marks and leave none of your own induced imperfections behind and deliver the vehicle to the customer that same day.
What you need to achieve this result
Zero micro‑marring
microfiber pads used to polish some paints can leave micro marring so if this happens to you, switch to a foam for one pass after the microfiber pad or replace the microfiber pad with the best possible foam you can find that delivers the cut and gloss you need to achieve. Most often this will be the spitfire green all rounder but sometimes with softer paints the midas touch or lone star pad will be the ideal pad or even an orange HDO. Before you start polishing always moisten the foam pad with water, non protective quick detailer, pad lube or a rinseless wash to prevent dry buffing which tears up the foam face and wears them prematurely.

Panel‑to‑panel uniformity — no inconsistent finishes across all panels
True correction — no fillers, no illusions. Inspect with windex and acetone wipedown or a prep spray to ensure the results you achieved are true.
Rhopoint detailometer readings you should achieve
- Haze level : 0.1–0.4 (0.0 is almost always only achievable with the rotary)
- Gloss Rating: 90-96 gloss units – over 100 is usually the realm of the rotary only but you may get there sometimes)
- RIQ / Rspec: 87–99 (the more orange peel the paint has the lower this number will be so is less important)
Timeframes
To perform this service well on anything from a small car to an extra large suv, the time you spend on it to be efficient and profitable should be between two and six hours. Three to four hours is the average. Large SUV’s could take six hours or maybe seven
In order to achieve these time frames, I highly suggest using non diminishing abrasive compounds and polishes like 3D ACA (alpha ceramic alumina) and other fast acting products. CSI Ceram X or XX is another which you can use by itself for any paint correction service. These allow thirty to sixty second cycle times or longer of polishing that achieve alot of correction within just one to two passes. Try to limit your number of passes when polishing to between one and two where possible for this service. Three to four passes is the industry standard but see if you can do cars within just two slow passes. With sticky paints I recommend twice as many passes with double the arm speed (1 to 1.5 inches per second not 0.5) using a DA polisher so the paint stays cooler and less likely to become sticky.
Working area sizes play a big part in achieving these timeframes also. The ideal working area size to polish in one go with this service is half of the size of the panel or one third at the most.
So two or three sections of a door, fender or rear quarter panel, boot and four sections of the roof. With the bonnet and roof no more than four sections total. The smaller the area you do the bigger defect removal and wow factor in terms of gloss that you get but it takes longer to do a large panel so look at how bad the paint condition is and try a couple different working area sizes – one third the panel and half the panel, compare then choose the size you find better but won’t increase your time frame dramatically.
Half a bonnet in one go can be done but requires spreading of polish over the entire area not just onto the pad, moisten the pad and begin polishing. You may get the desired cut but lack the transformative improvement as the abrasives have been spread further out and are less effective so colour richness and gloss will not be as rich, wet and reflective

Preparation
I must mention the preparation work that you cannot skip if consistently great results and repeat business is what you desire as a true professional. Spend thirty minutes to an hour preparing the car. Wash it thoroughly, dewax/strip any paint protection and road film with dewaxers and traffic film removers, decontaminate the paintwork and any piano black exterior trims on the B and C pillars using both chemical (fallout remover) and mechanical (clay) decontamination products. My recommendation is to decontaminate chemically first then mechanically with a clay towel or mitt then use a fine or soft grade clay bar on the paintwork, glass and B/C pillars if they can be polished to pick up what the towel or mitt cannot and make the paint even smoother.
For more efficiency you can use a clay pad on a machine to do the paint faster but keep the pad away from body lines and edges of panels as they can leave nasty white marks from the rubber polymer touching them and you must keep the pad lubricated and do not use too larger orbit stroke polisher – a 6 mm to 12 mm orbit DA polisher is ideal for this.
Ensure that tar, tree sap, bugs, iron fallout and all other above surface contaminants are removed. If the paint once washed, decontaminated and dried has etched in water marks use a mineral neutraliser like IGL Delete, Starke Venom or any acidic wash to neutralise them so when you polish them they do not come back again.
Optional Equipment
Masking Tape – to mask or not to mask that is the question
Whilst masking tape is alot cheaper than paint and is good to use to protect door handles, edge of panels and exterior trim that cannot be polished, the time it takes to mask up an entire car or even mask as you go from panel to panel can seriously reduce your efficiency and increase the overall time it takes you. I prefer to mask as I go if I do but don’t tend to tape up most or all of the vehicle when doing a gloss enhancement or one stage paint correction. But if you prefer the safety of taping up then do so where you feel it is critical for you to do so for safety reasons then go ahead. It is personal preference. My favourite masking tape is the Japanese Kamui yellow tape as it doesn’t tear when bent around oval or round shape door handles and side mirror trim and does not leave the annoying adhesive residue on the paint that your pad or towels can pick up and spread.
Make your choice – there is no right or wrong way here. With older cars with trim around the bottom and top of the side windows you may be better off leaving them unmasked as sometimes their delicate UV damaged black layer can peel off with the tape when you go to remove it. It has happened to me a few times.
Supplimental wetting agents
Nanolex Optimizer, Paraffin oil and certain pad lubricants plus rinseless wash and protectant free detail sprays can be used to provide increased lubrication, better filming of thicker drier polishes and compounds to film better on various paints and help you deal with porous paint that absorbs polishes like a sponge.
If your compound or polish of choice is not filming evenly on the paint, sticking to it, making the pad drag or causing your polishing experience to be less than desired or your dealing with sticky paints, do the following
One small drop of paraffin oil on the pad every section or second section you polish adds more lubrication and improves filming of drier products and slightly reduces surface temperatures, helps polishes to film better and evenly on the surface
Optimizer can transform separated compounds and polishers that have sat on the shelf for ages and separated or are simply always separating due to a poor quality formulation. Apply Optimizer to the polish bottle (250ml size recommended) with 10-20 ml of product to every 250 ml of compound or polish. Shake it thoroughly and then see how nicely the product comes out the bottle. It’s creamier and will film better and not separate again most often. Add optimizer to a deodarant roll on container and apply a small amount of it to the pad face to moisten fibers, foam and reduce the likelyhood of dry buffing.
Use rinseless wash at 1:50, 1:100 and up to 1:500 as a polish residue remover, to moisten a dry foam pad before starting to correct paint and to do wet compounding when needed if the paint simply absorbs the polish straight away or your working on oxidised paint. It will keep flushing the abraded clear coat paint away, reactive the polish or compound and rework it and make the cut more aggressive in most case so you may need to clean the pad and do one more pass over it with a few drops of polish to refine it more.
pad lubricants like Liquid Elements pad prime are excellent for minimising the risk of dry buffing, poor finishes, dust and making pads last a little longer.
Techniques
Here are a few different techniques with DA and forced rotation polishers that have proven to work well for me over the decades since getting my first large orbit DA polisher in 2008.
DA – Speed 3 or 3 1/2 then 2 1/2 and 2
My default technique with these machines is to use speed 3 or 3 1/2 for one pass with light pressure then lower it to speed two and a half for one pass then 2 for one more pass. You can stay at one speed like three the whole time too if you like. Where there is no support under certain sections of the bonnet and other panels I sometimes get tick marks when using speed one and a half or two so in those places I increase speed to four or five with a little pressure and this eliminates the tick marks due to better pad oscillation and rotation.
Speed 3 then 5 and back to 2
Doing an initial pass over the area at speed 3 with half an inch to one inch per second arm speed to not overheat the paint and following up with a pass at speed 5 with twice the arm speed is enough usually to remove the defects, polish the paint andgloss it up and by slowing down to speed 2 refines the paint down nicely and gives me the high gloss finish I desire
Experiment with different speed combinations and find the right combo that gets you the cut and the gloss finish you desire on different paints but always remember that the general public does not see what we see and if you make this service too good it is extremely difficult to sell any of the higher paint correction services you may wish to provide at way higher prices
Forced rotation speed 5 – 4 – 3 – 2
This is a technique from the days when diminishing abrasives were the bees knees and that I used a heck of a lot during the fifteen years with my detailing business. Try it with diminishing abrasive products only like the Sonax range.
Forced rotation speed 5 or 6 then 3-2-1
With forced rotation machines they often need to be used at high speeds to get great correction results so this technique is one to try with one pass of each speed setting
PRO TIP: Always be willing to try different products and techniques and smaller or larger orbit sized polishers as being able to adapt to different paint types, hardnesses, colours and paints that simply do not like certain machines is one of the keys to polishing success. I recommend having a one product paint correction cream like CSI Ceram XX, 3D One, Koch Chemie, one cutting compound, an All in One polish with protection and two different finishing polishes to cover all the variables and differences between paints. Or if you feel confident enough, adopt the NXTZEN NXT Cut Master system with the light, medium and heavy abrasive powders and the cut master fluid that suspends the powders and produce your own unique compound or polish based on what grade of abrasive you choose, the percentage of it you blend in with the cut master fluid and how much fluid you use as well.
BEFORE/AFTER RESULTS







Final tips: If the paint is is in a really bad shape then I highly recommend a 25 mm orbit DA polisher or a forced rotation machine which can both seriously correct paint and give a phenomenal transformation in just one step but forced rotation will get into places closer than the 25 mm orbit size tool can.
With some paints their could be a possibility albeit rare for forced rotation polishers to leave an induced defect somewhat like a hologram from the gear driven action. This is very rare but if it does, do one pass over the area with a random orbital polisher. Whilst some say forced rotation polishers do not finish well, my time using them including the Festool Rotex, Makita BO6050 dual mode, PO6000C bigger brother dual mode DA and Dynabrade DB8, the finish that can be achieved with good to great technique is sometimes phenomenal – eclipsing random orbitals and giving rotary like finishes without the holograms
If the paint your working on is sticky – use random orbital polishers only, smaller three and five inch pads and use faster arm speed and do more passes as this will prevent the paint from becoming warm enough to become sticky. Some additional paraffin oil for lubrication and rinseless wash and a very damp towel will help remove any stuck residue
The keys to successful polishing
Keep your pads clean, use a little bit of pressure at least when using DA polishers, use more pads to work efficiently by using another clean pad every one or two panels not dragging one or two out over the entire car. Yes it can be done but the foam at some point will lose it’s cut power if you overuse it. That is with anything other than the pad king elite series pads.
Do not use too much product – one or two drops using the ZviZZer method is the best I’ve tested in two decades of using DA polishers.
Last but not least – pricing
During the last several years of my detailing business my one step corrections were $750 without any coating or protection included and were four to six hours timeframe to do
This was back when polishes were seventy dollars for one litre on average, now they are over ninety to one hundred and thirty dollars almost unless you buy five litres or gallons which does make it a little cheaper.
So what should you charge for this service?
My recommendation is to charge at least $500 and up to $800. Your time is not returnable, the time you spend doing someone’s car needs to be properly charged for as you deserve to be rewarded and with the need for businesses in Australia to be charging $120 to $150 an hour now in line with the automotive industry. If you spend three to six hours doing this then your easily at the $450 to $750 price tag to cover your time especially if your mobile plus cost of materials, wear and tear on machines, your vehicle if mobile plus chemicals, pads and equipment
Don’t rip your customer off but do not short change yourself either. Remember that you can never get your time back, focus on delivering top quality work consistently, give value to the customer whilst rewarding yourself for your physical labour.
